Performance

  This section presents the results of our measurements of the Ricochet system. We performed the experiments in two environments. The first is the commercially deployed Ricochet network which covers the San Francisco Bay Area. The second is a local system set up on the Berkeley Campus as part of the Daedalus project. This local system includes three Ethernet radios, six packet radios, a Gateway, a Name Server Router, and a Name Server (same as the commercial name server).

The measurements performed were as follows:

• Reliable Transport (TCP) Measurements:
  • Throughput under varying packet sizes and receiver socket buffer size.
  • Connection dynamics behavior, in particular the variability of the round-trip timer estimate.
• Unreliable Transport (UDP) Measurements: throughput and jitter.
• Interactive Response: latencies in a telnet connection.
• Inter-Device Interactions: with the AT&T; WaveLAN device.
