March 15, 1998 -- "The Wings of the Dove" is a complex psychological drama about a tragic romantic triangle. The story is written by Hossein Amini based on the Henry James novel.

Helena Bonham Carter was nominated for an Academy Award for her portrayal of Kate Croy, a woman in need of money to support her drug-addicted father. She is forced to live with her aunt, Maude (chillingly played by Charlotte Rampling). Maude forbids her romance with Merton Densher (Linus Roache), a poor journalist.

Croy hits upon an idea to get her out of the jam. She arranges for Densher to romance Millie Thearle (Allison Elliot) a rich American who is dying, so he can inherit her fortune. They will then be free of Maude's influence.

Of course things don't turn out as they planned. Densher falls in love with Millie and Kate becomes jealous of them. All three of these characters end up wrestling with the moral conflicts set up by Croy's plan. Although the British class struggles and the morality and politeness in the film are dated, the conflicts between love and money are universal, so the film is very relevant to society today, where class distinctions are once again becoming obvious. This film rates a B+. It also rates an "R" for sex and nudity.
