Terminal Velocity

A goofy, but fun actioner with one fantastic stunt

September 26, 1994 -- ``Terminal Velocity'' is yet another no-brain Hollywood action film that is standard in every way but one. It does have one stunt that is really spectacular.

It's hard to tell which film has the dumber plot, ``Terminal Velocity'' or ``Timecop.'' ``Terminal Velocity'' lumbers through a cliché-ridden plot which makes little sense and is very inconsistent and is in no way believable.

Charlie Sheen plays a hot-shot smart-aleck parachutist who is inexplicably singled out to be an unwilling accomplice by Russian spy Natassia Kinski in a mad scheme to recover stolen Russian gold in the U.S.

It seems that Kinski and her partner are the only agents in the U.S. who can recover millions of dollars of gold stolen from the government by the Russian Mafia (ex-KGB or ``KG used to Be''). They are greatly outnumbered by the bad guys, who lurk around every corner. The recovery includes parachuting into a high security facility and recovering a computer disc stored in a phallic symbol.

After viewing the disc and discovering the location of the gold they have to keep the bad guys from taking it to South America. This process naturally involves a lot of fisticuffs, gunfire and explosions in addition to parachute stunts.

One stunt near the end of the film is really spectacular. It is also unbelievable. It involves gunfire, explosions, fisticuffs, windmills and flying cars, among other things. It makes one wonder how good this film might have been if as much attention had been paid to plot and character development as was given to that one stunt.

There are a few good one-liners for Charlie Sheen and a few other laughs sprinkled through the film. Unfortunately, the film is not a good enough parody of action films to be really funny. It tries to be half-serious and half funny and ends up being middling and muddled.

Still, it's not boring. The action does keep coming at you and there is one great stunt. It rates a C.
