July 5, 1994 -- ``I Love Trouble'' is about a couple of rival journalists, Peter Brackett, played by Nick Nolte and Sabrina Peterson, played by Julia Roberts, who are trying to scoop each other on the same big story. They are trying to find out what caused a train wreck.
A trail of clues lead them both to a chemical company and industrial intrigue. There are a number of false leads and plot becomes thoroughly twisted before it is finished, but that part of the story is secondary in importance to the underlying romantic comedy.
You can see the romantic angle a mile away. The feuding, evolving relationship between the two is one of many movie cliches cluttering up the film. There are also obligatory chase scenes, a bad-guy-hiding-in-the-back-seat scene, a dead-guy-falling-out-of-the-closet scene and numerous scenes of bad guys watching everything, seeing nothing, and, of course, shooting very crookedly at the good guys.
There are no fresh approaches here. The dialogue isn't very clever. The plot is dumb, but it moves along at a pretty good pace. If the movie had taken itself seriously it would have been dreadful, but thank goodness it doesn't. The stars, Nolte and Roberts are likable and there is some chemistry between them, but that isn't enough to elevate this material to an above-average product. It rates a C.
