November 2, 1997 -- You've probably heard about "The Full Monty" by now since it is one of the more successful foreign films in recent years.

You have probably heard it is about a group of out-of-work steelworkers who hit upon the idea of becoming male strippers. You have probably also heard it is a very funny film. What you probably haven't heard that this film has almost nothing to do with nudity.

This movie is about the desperate lengths people will go to in the name of love. The whole idea of making steelworkers into strippers is concocted by Gaz (Robert Carlyle of "Trainspotting") who needs the money for alimony so he can see his son.

Another guy who gets talked into the crazy scheme is the men's former supervisor at the plant, Gerald (Tom Wilkinson). The men despise Gerald, but when they find out he is an expert dancer, they pursue him relentlessly until he joins the troupe as choreographer. He is so insecure about losing his job, he hasn't told his wife about the job loss for months.

The other key player is Dave (Mark Addy) a chubby fellow who is chock full of insecurities after losing his job. He begins to turn his back on his friends and his wife. Dave's struggle to overcome these insecurities is one of the centerpieces of the story.

The story is about a group of people who support each other in their quest to survive in the face of despair. It is also about a love of music and dance. The movie also has something to say about sexual stereotypes and exploitation. There is some partial nudity in the film, but that's really not what it is all about. This is really a very heartwarming film that also happens to be a lot of fun. It rates a B.
