June 23, 1997 -- "Addicted to Love" is a low power romantic comedy that has some good laughs and some good acting, but not quite enough of either to raise it above the average summer movie.
The film stars Matthew Broderick as Sam, a starstruck astronomer who can't get over his girlfriend Linda (Kelly Preston) dumping him. He goes to New York to try to get her back. He camps out in an abandoned building and spies on Linda and her lover, Anton Depeaux (Tchéky Karyo).
He is soon joined by Depeaux's ex-lover, Maggie (Meg Ryan). But Maggie isn't content to spy, she wants revenge. Soon she convices Sam to join her. Some of the revenge schemes are very funny. Of course eventually the two revenge-seekers fall in love with each other.
The ending of the film is fairly lame as the story runs out of gas long before the last reel is finished spooling through the projector, but the climactic showdown between Depeaux and Sam is pretty interesting.
Broderick and Ryan work well together as a comedy team and Tchéky Karyo has a knack for physical comedy. The dialogue isn't great, but the screenwriters do come up with some clever stunts to keep the film interesting. Oh, and if you expected to hear that song by Robert Palmer on the soundtrack, they don't play it until the credits, and it is sung by somebody else. This movie rates a C.
