November 27, 2025 – I wasn't expecting much from this film, being a sequel, but it turns out to be very funny, a worthy successor to the first film.
In this movie, Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde, new cop partners, get into a lot of trouble with the department because they cause a lot of property damage in a high speed chase. They are sent to department couples therapy with group sessions with other mismatched cop partners.
Judy has a hunch that something is going on with a recent shipment to Zootopia. She talks her reluctant partner, Nick, into an investigation, even though the two are under departmental suspension. Sure enough, they uncover a conspiracy that shakes Zootopia to its core, and earn them the enmity of a very powerful family.
Dodging the police and others intent on stopping Judy and Nick from uncovering a secret that would ruin them, the intrepid investigators embark on a wild adventure that takes them under water and into a remote desert hideout. Along the way, they are aided by a hilariously inappropriate getaway driver, a renegade pit viper with good manners named Gary De'Snake, a beaver conspiracy podcaster and a variety of other creatures living on the edges of Zootopian society.
The talented voice cast includes Ginnifer Goodwin as Judy Hopps, Jason Bateman as Nick Wilde, Ke Huy Quan as Gary De'Snake, Fortune Feimster as Nibbles Maplestick, a beaver podcaster from the endangered Marsh Market who helps Judy and Nick solve the case and Andy Samberg as Pawbert Lynxley who pursues the case with Judy and Nick for his own reasons.
There are numerous comical references to earlier Pixar cartoons, and current events. There are plenty of laughs for adults as well as children. It is very cleverly written and the animation is of high quality. The quest for justice here is not just to set the record straight about the history of Zootopia, but to right a greater wrong about the illegitimate exclusion of a whole kingdom of animals from Zootopia. That is something that has parallels in the United States, past and present.
Zootopia 2 sets itself up for another sequel, which might happen, since Walt Disney Animation Studios, which produced this film is embarked on a big campaign of remakes and sequels. This includes not just sequels of cartoons, but live action remakes of popular cartoons, such as The Lion King, The Little Mermaid and Mulan. While it would be nice to see more original material, if the next sequel is as good as this one, then I am onboard with the next Zootopia sequel. This movie rates a B+.
