July 4, 2026 – I wanted to see this movie in 3D, but the local theaters, Regal and Studio City, stopped showing it in 3D after only two or three days, instead of the usual week or two, so I trundled over to Cheyenne to see it at the Capital Cinema 16, where they were showing it in 3D, sort of.

When the movie finally started, it was apparent to me that the 3D was not working right (having seen many 3D movies in theaters and at home, too). Some scenes looked O.K. while others were plagued by some double images. I informed management of the problem. I had recently run into similar problems with another 3D movie at the Regal Fox Theater 6 in Laramie. While the Regal staff quickly fixed the problem, the Capital Cinema 16 staff did not fix it at all. I got the impression they thought I did not know how to wear 3D glasses. Really? That's what you think?

It seems that while most theaters still have 3D equipment because of the continuing release of Avatar movies, they have become lax about 3D equipment maintenance and staff 3D training. Oh, well, I watched the movie as it was, and it is not a bad movie, but it would have been more enjoyable with a decent presentation.

This new Supergirl (her Kryptonian name is Kara Zor-El) movie features Milly Alcock, who last year briefly appeared as Supergirl in “Superman.” She gives a good performance in this movie as a woman who has lost her parents and her home with the destruction of Krypton. She feels she doesn't belong anywhere. She is supposed to feel at home on Earth, where her cousin, Superman (played by David Corenswet of “Superman.”) lives. It appears that Superman (Kal-El) has adapted to earth better because he grew up on earth from infancy, while Supergirl grew up with Kryptonians. Her sorrow is more intense because of this.

Supergirl drowns her sorrows by drinking in bars on other planets, wandering about aimlessly without purpose. One day, her life is thrown into even more turmoil when raiders, led by the powerful Brigand leader Krem (played by Matthias Schoenaerts of “The Old Guard”) steal her spaceship and poison her dog, Krypto. She sets out on a dangerous quest to track down Krem and his minions in order to get the antidote to the poison threatening her dog, and to get some revenge, too.

This leads her on a wild planet-hopping pursuit of the Brigands. She is joined by sword-wielding, vengeance-seeking Ruthye Marye Knoll (Eve Ridley) whose parents were murdered by Krem. Supergirl and Ruthye also encounter a powerful bounty hunter, Lobo (Jason Momoa of the “Aquaman” movies) who is also after Krem.

The story has a lot to do with dealing with loss, the importance of family, and the corrosive emotions of revenge. While Supergirl cautions Ruthye about the caustic nature of revenge, she doesn't follow her own advice. It seems like Ruthye and Lobo are potentially interesting characters who could have played a bigger role in this story, but they get sidelined. One of the problems with these Superman-based stories is that these heroes have god-like powers which cannot be matched. That weakness is nullified in this story with good old Kryptonite, and the fact that Supergirl loses her powers when exposed to the light from red stars during her quest, and the light from other stars that emit other wavelengths not conducive to her superpowers.

There is plenty of drama and action in this movie, as well as some humor. The acting is solid and the story is compelling, despite some awkwardly placed flashback scenes and slow pacing at times. I am used to seeing clean sets in science fiction movies, but this movie is heavily into grunge, not unlike some other science fiction movies made in recent years. I've been a Superman fan since the 1950s, and it is good to have one of the original superheroes back on the big screen. This movie rates a C+.
