May 28, 2026 – This Star Wars spinoff is a lot like the original 1977 Star Wars movie, light and fun, without all the tragedy and heavy drama of the later films. There are those who prefer the heavy drama, but that would not be me.
This movie is based on the Disney series “The Mandalorian,” which I have not seen, although I have seen all the Star Wars movies, so I know at least some of the background to this story. This is about a bounty hunter, Din Djarin, the Mandalorian (played by Pedro Pascal of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”) and his young apprentice, Grogu (often referred to as “Baby Yoda,” because he is a member of the same species as Yoda, but, in fact, is not Baby Yoda).
In this story Mandalorian has stopped working as a freelance bounty hunter. He now works for the New Republic by capturing warlords who are left over from the defeated evil empire. The movie opens with one such dangerous mission. He reluctantly agrees to go on another dangerous mission to rescue the son of Jabba the Hutt when New Republic commander Ward (Sigourney Weaver of the “Alien” movies) makes him a irresistible offer to do so.
Mandalorian, along with his powerful sidekick and pilot Garazeb “Zeb” Orrelios (voiced by Steve Blum) and Grogu set out to make a deal with the powerful Hutts to find and return Rotta the Hutt (voiced by Jeremy Allen White of “Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere”) to them. In return, the Hutts agree to provide information on the whereabouts of dangerous Imperial warlord, Commander Coin. The capture of Commander Coin is the real goal of this mission.
The Mandalorian soon finds both Rotta the Hutt and Commander Coin, but he also discovers the situation is far more complex than he was led to believe. He decides to break his deal with both the Hutts and the New Republic. This gets him in a lot of trouble with everybody. Rotta the Hutt is not your typical Hutt. He's got abs and he is a formidable fighter. He is also a straight shooter who becomes a friend to the Mandalorian and Grogu.
This movie is packed with action from end to end. Action, along with its other key selling point, the undeniable cuteness of Grogu, and some humor, make this movie enjoyable, like most movies directed by Marvel mainstay Jon Favreau (“Iron Man”). The movie is well acted, but most of the actors are hindered by acting from behind masks or computer animated faces. This is largely an exercise in voice acting. One of those voice actors is famed director Martin Scorcese (“Hugo”) who is heard as the voice of comic relief character Hugo Durant, a shop keeper and reluctant informant. This movie rates a B.
