Romantic comedy about mishaps and mistakes

[Strip of film rule]

December 18, 2014 -- This romantic comedy about both heterosexual and lesbian couples and their circle of friends is relatively lightweight, but there is some drama when the couples split up, or come close to a breakup.

At the center of all these different friends and romances are two lifelong friends who start to drift apart, Sasha (Leighton Meester of “That's My Boy”) and Paige (Gillian Jacobs of “The Incredible Burt Wonderstone”). Sasha and Paige are the kind of close friends who spend a lot of time together and play games, like pretending to have fights with each other in public.

Sasha is a gay slacker and Paige is a straight lawyer. Both are from wealthy families and are somewhat spoiled women in their late 20s. They start to drift apart when Paige finds romance with a handsome young doctor, Tim (Adam Brody of “Think Like a Man Too”). When Paige and Tim start spending a lot of time together, Sasha starts feeling left out. She loses her job and gets into fights with her friends, gradually becoming an outcast. She needs her old friend back.

Paige, texting while driving, backs into her neighbor's car, but refuses to take responsibility, or to pay for the damages. Tim advises her to pay for the damages rather than starting a war with the neighbor, but Paige insists she is in the right. Tim is irritated with Paige's insistence that she is always right and her refusal to compromise on anything. He also doesn't like the fact that Paige is forcing him to change his wardrobe. She doesn't like his fashion sense. Tim is willing to compromise on things like this, but Paige isn't.

Sasha has a dream of being a musician. She is supposed to be composing songs, but doesn't seem to really have the drive, or even desire, to do that. She is in a relationship with a younger, immature woman that isn't going anywhere. Both she and Paige have their blowups, take stock in their lives. Both of them end up trying to do better for themselves and for their friends and lovers. This is a case of two people given every advantage in life and somehow they almost end up wasting all those advantages.

I did laugh a few times. There is some funny stuff in this lightweight comedy, but clearly, I'm not the target audience for this film. I'm a guy and I'm 30 years too old to appreciate what is going on with these people. This movie is soaked in estrogen. Anyone who would risk the breakup of a romance over something as trivial as fashion is as foreign to me as a Martian. This is not a film aimed at guys like me, so I'll give it a break. This film rates a C+.
