February 22, 2024 – An ex-soldier working as a window washer on a tall building in London finds herself in a desperate battle against terrorists to save the life of her brother in this tense action film.
Daisy Ridley (of the recent Star Wars movies) stars as Joey Locke, an ex-soldier working as a window washer on a building owned by a corrupt energy company. An early establishing scene shows that Locke and her brother, Michael (Matthew Tuck) grew up in a very troubled household, and their relationship is still tense.
Michael is an autistic computer hacker, who has just gotten himself thrown out of an adult care residence, and she must take him to work or lose her job for being late. While Michael hangs out in the lobby, his sister Joey hangs from the roof of the building, washing windows, talking to people in the control room via radio. Unsupervised, Michael sees a chance to slip away inside the building and goes wandering around, carrying a toy Thor hammer.
A band of eco-terrorists take over the building with guns and explosives. Their goal is to get the proof they need that the company, which claims to champion clean energy, is actually a corrupt polluter. The terrorists are led by Marcus (played by Clive Owen of “Gemini Man”). An extremist in his group, Noah (Taz Skylar of the “One Piece” series) who is too eager to kill and die for the cause, challenges Marcus for leadership.
The group uses a kind of knockout gas to render most of the people in the building unconscious as they take over a party attended not only by the company's top executives, but by top investors and government officials. They set about breaking into the company's records and compelling officials to admit their corrupt actions.
Michael hides in a closet and manages to stay conscious, while Joey looks for a way inside the building to rescue him. Joey gets some help from a veteran policewoman, played by Ruth Gemmell (of the “Bridgerton” series) who expertly sizes up the situation and decides that Joey is her best hope of dealing with the terrorists, even though other, less cautious, cops don't agree with her.
It takes quite a long time for Joey to get into the building since she is stuck outside, a long way from any entrance. Meanwhile, there is a lot of drama inside the building as the terrorists fight among themselves, fend off police attacks and try to get the hostages to cooperate with their scheme.
Once Joey gets into the building, the action ramps up as she tries to save her brother, the hostages, and the building itself, which is set to blow up. Writers Matthew Orton, Simon Uttley and Paul Andrew Williams are careful to add depth to Joey's character, starting with scenes from her childhood, which is useful since Joey carries the movie.
Both Daisy Ridley and Taz Skylar are experienced in fight scene techniques, and their final battle is quite well staged. The director of this movie, Martin Campbell, is very experienced in action movies (like “Casino Royale,” “Vertical Limit” and “Goldeneye”). Ridley has experience in action scenes, but she has been quoted as saying that this is her “first proper action movie.”
Daisy Ridley and Clive Owen are the most famous actors in this movie, but Owen's part in it is not much more than a cameo, which is unfortunate. He's a fine actor. In his day, I thought he would have made a fine James Bond, and he showed that potential in “Children of Men” (2006). So it is up to Ridley to carry this film, and she does just that, with good support from Matthew Tuck, Taz Skylar and Ruth Gemmell.
While this is certainly a standard action film in the mold of Die Hard, and it appears to have a limited budget, it holds up well thanks to some plot twists and a spirited performance by Daisy Ridley. This movie rates a B.
