August 1, 2025 – As a fan of the first Bad Guys movie and as a fan of 3D movies, I decided to trundle on down to Fort Collins, Colorado to see this in 3D because the theaters in town were only showing it in 2D.
It turns out to be about as good as the original, with a new bad guy threatening the world with a gold magnet, and the Bad Guys, of course, are the only ones who can save the world from a gold-plated catastrophe.
The story starts out with the Bad Guys struggling to fit into society. Their main problem is finding gainful employment since nobody wants to hire notorious ex-criminals. Their problems soon get worse when they are kidnapped and framed for a high profile robbery.
The kidnapping, frame and blackmail are all part of a very elaborate scheme to force the Bad Guys into stealing a substance called MacGuffinite (one of many movie insider jokes) which will enable a criminal known as the Phantom Bandit to build a machine to steal all the gold in the world.
The Bad Guys, led by getaway driver, Mr. Wolf, aided by his safecracker sidekick, Mr. Snake, master of diguise, Mr. Shark, the muscular Mr. Piranha, and the team's hacker, Ms. Tarantula. They are being opposed by the Phantom Bandit gang, Kitty Kat (a snow leopard) Doom (a raven) and Pigtail Petrova (a wild boar). In the early going, at least, it seems like the Bad Guys have met their match in the Phantom Bandit and the Bad Girls gang.
The story has a lot of twists and turns, along with some false leads as the Bad Guys try to figure out who is behind the scheme to frame and blackmail them. The story is further complicated by romances and the conflicted motives of Police Commissioner Misty Luggins who turns out to be a lot smarter than she first seems to be.
This story is very similar to that of the first movie. The characters are equally compelling. The movie jokes and other cultural references are funny. This is a successful sequel to the first movie, and that is no small feat. Usually, sequels are inferior. The story works, for the most part because the main characters are well developed and engaging. The Bad Guys, in particular have a strong group dynamic. The ways in which they interact carry the story along.
The 3D has pretty good depth, but it doesn't look there wasn't a lot of effort to incorporate the 3D effect into the visuals, the way this was done, for instance, in “Despicable Me 4.” The best 3D cartoons, like “Thunder and the House of Magic” raise the effect to a much higher level than most. This movie rates a B.
