Michael Meyers is back with vengeance

August 15, 1998 -- Michael Meyers is back for one more stalk around the studio. The seventh sequel in this slasher series starts 20 years after the original show, back where it started with Jaime Lee Curtis, the queen of scream. That explains the long title, "Halloween H20: 20 Years Later."

After a series of lackluster sequels, this one has some shocks in it. There is plenty of blood, and one graphic scene of a woman's throat being cut. It was creepy and it scared me a little. The plot revolves around a bunch of people trapped in a school while being stalked by a killer.

It was a nice touch to have Jaime Lee Curtis' mother in the film, Janet Leigh, who starred in "Psycho." I've always like Adam Arkin, and he has a interesting role in this film as the love interest of Keri Tate, also known as Laurie Strode (Curtis) the sister of Michael Meyers. LL Cool J has a good role as a security guard who is trying to be a novelist.

The movie was competently staged by director Steve Miner, and the actors were fine. It held my interest throughout. It's just that this story has worn itself out from the retelling. I also have a problem with the formula. Sure, evil exists, but so does good. In this formula, evil has superhuman strength and is invulnerable to attack. How are we supposed to have a fair fight? What this movie needs is Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It rates a C+.
