April 18, 1999 -- "Go" has more going for it than being the movie with the shortest title since "Pi." It is a clever, hot crime movie with an interesting, three-way story line.

The movie follows the implications of a drug deal through three sets of characters, each storyline starts at the same point in time, at the end of a work shift in a supermarket. Ronna Martin (Sarah Polley of "The Sweet Hereafter") is about to get off work from her job as a checkout clerk, when a fellow employee, Simon Baines (Desmond Askew) offers her money to take his shift so he can go with his friends to Las Vegas.

Later, two men Zack (Jay Mohr of "Jerry McGuire") and Adam (Scott Wolf), come to Ronna's counter looking for Baines. Zack and Adam say they want to score some drugs (Baines is a small time drug dealer) and Ronna says she will see what she can do. She goes to see Baines' supplier, Todd Gaines (Timothy Olyphant of "Scream 2") who is a very scary guy.

Ronna and Gaines work out a complicated arrangement for a drug called "Ecstasy" which Ronna plans to sell to Zack and Adam. All this dealing is so she will have enough money to pay her rent, which is due the next day. As you can see, the plot is already getting complicated and we haven't even scratched the surface of it yet. There's also subplots involving a shooting, a stolen car, some car accidents, a drug overdose and many other strange events.

The story starts out with different characters who seem to be going in different directions, but they end up being intertwined. Some of the characters in the movie are extremely dumb and others are smart, but almost all of them end up doing at least one dumb thing. None of them, it seems has any sense of moral values. They do whatever they think they can get away with.

Sarah Polley (Ronna) is a lot of fun to watch. She reminds me of Jennifer Love Hewitt, except that Polley can act. She's very adept at using subtle facial expressions to convey a lot of information. Timothy Olyphant (Todd Gains) is both charming and scary as the cool, calculating drug dealer. James Woods look-alike William Fichtner ( of "Armageddon") is hilarious as Burke, a cop with dreams of a home business empire. The rest of the supporting cast is also quite good.

Director Doug Liman and screenwriter John August deserve a lot of credit for a story which is very complex, but compelling and entertaining at the same time. The characters are engaging, if somewhat wacko and it is fun to keep up with the turns and twists in the plot. This film rates a B.
