Winter Passing – A dark story of Reese Holdin (Zooey Deschanel), the daughter of two notable authors with repressed feelings of her childhood from being neglected, who left her home in Michigan six and a half years earlier at 18 for New York City to become an occasional actress. Her mother had died six months before the opening of this winter’s tale. A publisher offers her $100,000 for the letters her parents wrote to each other, so she returns to her father’s house to retrieve them.

She finds her father, Don Holdin (Ed Harris), living in his garage and sleeping in his backyard, disheveled and drowning himself with booze, while two otherwise homeless persons – Corbitt (Will Ferrell), a lost soul formerly a member of a Christian rock band, and Shelly (Amelia Warner), an orphaned former student and admirer – reside in the house and take care of Don’s needs. During the first meal together, Reese is astonished that her father allows grace to be said. She says to them, referring to her father: “… the same man who told his six-year-old daughter that Christmas was a Republican capitalistic conspiracy created by the Hallmark Corporation ….” This unusual group of individuals form a family of sorts, gain insights and understandings from one another, make adjustments, and find acceptance.
