Vincent and Theo – (1990) Director Robert Altman’s film of the conflicted relationship between Vincent van Gogh (Tim Roth) and his younger brother Theo (Paul Rhys) opens with an auction sale at Christie’s of Sunflowers. Vincent painted “I am the holy spirit. I am whole in the spirit.” across the wall of his apartment in Provence, France, where he and Paul Gauguin (Wladimir Yordanoff) painted together. Theo, undergoing treatment for syphilis, lived in Paris, earning a living as an art dealer from which he supported his brother who suffered for ten years as an artist, a disease that killed him at the age of 37. This story contrasts their lives – Vincent takes up with his model, a pregnant prostitute, and her daughter while Theo courts the ladies, eventually marrying Jo, the sister of his Dutch friend Andries Bonger – before their fates merge.
