The
Triplets of Belleville – (2003) Opening with a grainy, black-and-white
musical revue featuring the female Triplets of Belleville singing among other
acts, mimicking an old film on a tv broadcast, this is an unusual French
animated feature that for 80 minutes relies almost entirely on visual
information to propel the strange story of Madame Souza and her grandson
Champion forward. Without dialogue (thus no need for subtitles), other than
Bruno the dog’s frequent barking at the train passing by Madame Souza’s house,
Champion grows up with his grandmother’s help to become a bicyclist in the Tour
de France. A pair of look-alike, square-shouldered kidnappers grab Champion
and two other cyclists during the race and take a ship for
