Stay – What thoughts and images might pass through someone’s mind following a trauma preceding death? A suicidal art student Henry Letham (Ryan Gosling) becomes a patient of Dr Sam Foster (Ewan McGregor). Henry, who had been involved in an automobile accident, tells Dr Foster of his intention to kill himself at midnight on the Saturday of his 21st birthday, three days away. Henry’s off-hand comments turn out to be bizarre predictions of the future. Sam’s girlfriend Lila (Naomi Watts), an art teacher, had once tried to kill herself; Sam carries in his pocket the engagement ring he’s been putting off offering her.
The walls of Henry’s apartment are covered with tiny inscriptions of “Forgive me.” Sam’s obsession with trying to save Henry from himself leads to a meeting with Henry’s mother who is dead and other hallucinations and unaccountable events, such as Henry’s identity occasionally attaching itself to Sam. Henry heals a blind man’s eyesight (Bob Hoskins) with the touch of his hands and watches Athena, a waitress and aspiring actress, whom he’s told Sam he wants to marry, in a dance studio while he stands outside in the rain on Saturday night before walking to the Brooklyn Bridge.
