I Am Sam – Sam (Sean Penn), a mentally-retarded adult with the IQ of a seven-year-old and an obsession for John Lennon lore, becomes the father and sole parent of a baby girl, whose homeless mother abandoned them after giving birth. Sam loses custody through the intervention of child services and the legal system when Lucy (Dakota Fanning), named for “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds,” turns eight. He valiantly fights to recover her with the help of an attorney, Rita Harrison (Michelle Pfeiffer), who takes his case pro bono and has her own domestic difficulties. In the inspired tradition of Dustin Hoffman (Rain Man) and Mickey Rooney (Bill), Sean Penn creates a character so real that the story becomes as gripping as a documentary. Soundtrack of Beatles songs (mostly covered by other singers).
