(1999) A serial killer is on the loose in Chicago. "He's Coming" has been painted in lamb's blood onto the windows of a crime scene.
The first three victims are males, each 33 years of age with five quarters in their pockets, murdered on Fridays, having the names Peter (the owner of a fishing fleet), Matthew (an IRS agent), and James (stomach full of olives); the first two - missing a right arm and the head, respectively - have the Roman numerals for 119 and 2427 carved into their flesh, while the third had a leg severed.
On the case homicide detectives John Prudhomme (Christopher Lambert) and Andrew Hollinsworth (Leland Orser) nearly trap the killer with his third victim, but he escapes, leaving Andrew in agony. From co-producer Lambert's story concept (screenplay by Brad Mirman) of a crazy, crafty, very clever psychopath (Robert Joy) intent on reconstructing the body of Christ from other people's body parts in the weeks before Easter, director Russell Mulcahy spins a B-grade, gory crime thriller.
A Cajun cop having come up to the windy city (though the weather's mostly a drenching downpour) from New Orleans, Prudhomme has few friends in the department other than his partner; he carries about the guilt of his young son's accidental death a year earlier, for which he's lost his Catholic faith. Nevertheless, he seeks help from Father Rousell in interpreting the meaning of Boanerges (the sons of thunder as Jesus referred to the brothers James and John in Mark 3:17) from a note the killer has sent to the police.
FBI agent Greg Wingate volunteers his expertise as a profiler, which Prudhomme initially finds unremarkable, though later the detective turns more receptive after his efforts prove futile in capturing the killer.
With Andrew's landing in the hospital, the confrontation between cop and killer becomes personal; the murderer sends a message to his adversary that he will be punished with "remorse for the death of your wife." O sweet mother Mary of Jesus, more horrors abound.
