The Opposite of Sex – an edgy, complicated comedy. Dedee Truitt (Christina Ricci) – a manipulative, 16-year-old tramp – narrates her adventures following the death of her step-father until she gives birth to a baby boy. After making a scene at the funeral, she leaves her mother and moves in with her half-brother Bill Truitt (Martin Donovan), a 35-year-old, gay, high-school English teacher, who lives with his 26-year-old boyfriend Matt (Ivan Sergei), whom she seduces, and then announces she’s pregnant. Others involved include Lucia (Lisa Kudrow), Bill’s teaching colleague whose brother Tom had been Bill’s former lover before he died of AIDS; Carl (Lyle Lovett), the sheriff and Bill’s long-time friend; Jason (Johnny Galecki), another gay character who claims he’s Matt’s lover and accuses Bill of molestation; and Randy (William Lee Scott), Dedee’s boyfriend from her hometown.
Two scenes that I particularly appreciated: at school Bill enters the boys’ restroom, crowded with young men and cigarette smoke whom he shoos out, and finding one of his students who has scrawled a derogatory statement about Mr Truitt above a urinal takes advantage of a teachable moment to discuss sentence fragments and redundancy in the graffiti; Bill corrects another character’s incorrect use of “I could care less.” Very funny with lots of unexpected twists of plot.
