Nora – The Irish writer James Joyce met an uneducated chambermaid, Nora Barnacle, on June 16th, 1904, and together that year they fled Dublin for Trieste, Italy. Joyce would later memorialize that date in his novel Ulysses. Except for brief visits to Ireland, Joyce, who composed all his major works from his memories of Ireland, would remain an exile, penurious (earning a living from teaching languages and performing clerical work, since his writings did not provide a significant income until his later years when he went blind) residing in Europe. But this movie concerns itself with Nora, whom Joyce didn’t marry until several years after they had two children because of his antireligious principles, and their difficult relationship. She had been feral, fearless, and independent when they met; he bookish, inexperienced, insecure, and extremely jealous.
When they remove to Trieste, he has the advantage at first because he can speak Italian, but she learns, and her strength of character preserves the union and provides the poet with inspiration. Susan Lynch and Ewan McGregor star in this volatile tale of hidden meanings between a literary genius and his Queen Mab.
