Like Saul on the road to Damascus

Motorcycle Diariesgood, subtitles, somewhat in a documentary style; Guevara, at the age of 23, is depicted in the film by Gael Garcia Bernal as a 20th-century Saul of Tarsus on the road to Damascus, traveling with his soon-to-be-30-year-old friend Mial, a biochemist, having an epiphany on their seven-month trek in the first half of 1952 from Argentina to Venezuela, beginning by motorcycle (a 1939 Norton 500, fondly called “The Mighty One,” that doesn’t make the entire trip) and concluding with a sojourn at a leper colony in San Pablo, Peru, (significantly San Pablo is Spanish for Saint Paul) such that he is transformed from Ernesto into Che, from a student of medicine into "a doctor of souls," in the words of his traveling companion Alberto Granado. I suspect that disappointment in love had more to do with both the revolutionary's and the saint's transformation than their disciples would willingly admit.
