Laramie Movie Scope:
Lovely and Amazing

Lovely and Amazing – another quirky indie film. Brenda Blethyn plays Jane Marks, mother to three daughters to whom she has passed along aspects of her own deep insecurities: Michelle (Catherine Keener), 36-year-old wife and mother in a loveless marriage who gets involved with a teenager (Jake Gyllenhaal) after she gets a job in a one-hour photo-development outlet; Elizabeth (Emily Mortimer), an aspiring but angst-ridden actress; and Annie (Raven Goodwin), a precocious, adopted, African-American eight-year-old.

The mother, Jane, goes into a clinic for liposuction surgery but nearly dies from complications. What’s especially lovely and amazing occurs in a bedroom scene, post-coitus, with Elizabeth and an actor, with whom she’s having an affair, when she stands naked before him and asks him to critique her physical attributes and he obliges with fairness and fondness.
