Walk
the Line – Johnny Cash
wrote “I Walk the Line” as a promise to Vivian, his wife at the time, to be
faithful to her; this movie portrays Johnny Cash (Joaquin Phoenix) as a
philandering, pill-popping, pathetically insecure boy-man (though his dad shows
him no respect, Johnny keeps company with his parents, futilely trying to prove
himself worthy as a son) country-music star. Yet even when his beloved June
Carter (Reese Witherspoon) helps him regain sobriety, there’s little to suggest
in this picture the Christian accord that became the central focus of their
union. Also a better Elvis impersonator should have been found for Elvis’s
brief appearances.
