Ladies in Lavender – Before World War II in Cornwall, England, a young man is washed ashore below the beach house of two elderly spinsters, Ursula (Judi Dench) and Janet (Maggie Smith), who find and rescue him; Ursula immediately develops a deep, unsettling affection for him. The young man is Andre, a gifted Polish violinist, whose talent Olga (Natasha McElhone, a distant relation of my wife's family), a young German visitor, recognizes; her brother just happens to be a world-famous violinist, and so … but I don’t know the significance of “lavender” in the title nor does the film reveal why Andre ended up in the sea while sailing toward America.
