All the King’s Men – (1949, b/w) straightforward, chronological (no flashbacks) narrative with Broderick Crawford as Willie Stark, John Ireland as Jack Burden, and Mercedes McCambridge as Sadie Burke. Relationships between characters are clearly established, especially Anne and Adam’s relationship with their uncle Judge Stanton (who became Judge Irwin in the 2006 version); closer adaptation to the novel with Anne Stanton rather than Jack as the one directly responsible for her uncle (Jack’s father) Monte Stanton’s committing suicide. Nominated for seven Academy awards: won best film, best actor, and best actress. However, beside the new version, this movie lacks contemporary polish and pizzazz.
