Harrowing view of the future

Children of Men – It’s 2027 in London, a police state where illegal immigrants are rounded up while rogue gangs fight back and with one another; all other governments in the world have collapsed. The youngest person in the world has died at 18 years of age; procreation has ceased to be possible.

Based on P.D. James’s dystopian novel of the human race facing extinction. An anti-government organization led by Julian (Julianne Moore) forcibly recruit Theo Faron (Clive Owen), a sympathetic government bureaucrat, formerly Julian’s husband, to assist in the transport of a young Fijian woman who is pregnant to the safety of The Human Project on the ship Tomorrow. Trustworthy friends such as Jasper (Michael Caine) – who looks like the last hippie in a reclusive residence, surrounded by protest posters (including one against George W. Bush and the war in Iraq), listening to music from the ‘Sixties, living with his catatonic wife – are few, far between, and difficult to determine. It’s a harrowing vision of the future. (The same night that we watched this movie the news reported that two Mercedes sedans filled with gasoline, nails, and gas canisters had been parked near Piccadilly Circus in the bustling West End of London.)
