Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love
A tale of love and hate
by Patrick Ivers, Film Critic
Kama
Sutra: A Tale of Love – (1996) In 16th-century India a
princess and a servant girl grow up together in the same household, but on the
wedding day of Princess Tara (Sarita Choudhury), her handsome groom, the young
king (Naveen Andrews), first beds the beautiful, enchanting servant Maya (Indira
Varma). After Maya is dismissed for being a whore, she encounters a sculptor,
Jai Kumar (Ramon Tikaram), who tells her that a servant is a master in disguise,
and introduces her to the wise Rasa Devi (Rekha), a former courtesan who
instructs young women in the art of the kama
sutra, preparing them to be courtesans or wives. Rasa teaches the girls that the
art of love is far more than the act. At first Jai (half brother to the king
since his mother was the previous king’s courtesan) rejects Maya’s love, telling
her he must devote himself entirely to his work, even though his art has been
inspired by her. (Maya means that
which gives substance to illusion.) After the king rediscovers Maya through one
of Jai’s sculptures and takes her into his harem, Jai realizes his need and
love for her. His jealousy and the king’s frustration at not being able to win
over Maya’s heart result in tragedy. The king says to his queen, “You must hate
me,” to which Tara replies, “I don’t love you
enough to hate you.”
