Laramie Movie Scope:
Spider-Man 3
Vengeance leads to donut binge
by Patrick Ivers, Film Critic
Spider-Man 3 – “We
always have a choice, and we can always choose to do what’s right.” We had a
choice of Pirates of the Caribbean: At
World’s End – one critic scoffed by calling it At Wit’s End, Shrek the Third, Hot Fuzz, and Knocked Up; based on reviews and
personal recommendations perhaps the right choice would have been Knocked Up. At the outset of this story
everybody in New
York City (except, of course, the bad guys) loves
Spider-Man (Tobey Maguire), but the critics panned his girlfriend’s performance
on Broadway, which is giving Mary Jane (Kirsten Dunst) the blues. (She needn’t
feel so bad because everyone’s performance in this movie is laughable.) Peter
Parker and his erstwhile best friend Harry Osborn (James Franco) have had a
serious falling out ever since Spider-Man
2, when Harry’s father died in his attempts to do away with Spider-Man.
(Remember?) Well, Harry can’t remember anything of recent memory after a nasty
head injury during a fight with Peter Parker/Spider-Man.
Meanwhile an escaped
criminal (who says he wants to do right by his daughter who is ill), Flint Marko
(Thomas
Haden Church), gets demolecularized into the
Sand-Man; Peter later discovers this guy killed his uncle, so now it’s personal.
A meteorite strikes the Earth, and something black and gooey oozes out to
find Peter an attractive host for its symbiotic needs. Where did it come from?
Nobody knows, and after awhile, who cares? When this tarry stuff latches onto
Peter, he becomes more aggressive with a dark side previously unrevealed. Even
worse, black becomes Peter’s favorite color and disco moves his locomotion.
Also a new photographer, Eddie Brock (Topher Grace), is competing for Peter’s
job at the Daily Bugle and after
Peter humiliates him and takes away his girl (Bryce Dallas Howard), Eddie
wants revenge in the worst way. Vengeance and forgiveness are the competing
values. As compensation I ate five donuts and drank two cups of orange juice.
Maybe five donuts wasn’t such a good choice either.
