PBS Mystery: “Dead Gorgeous” – Adapted from Peter Lovesay’s 1989  novel On the Edge, the story is highly reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock’s Two Strangers on a Train, except that in this drama of sardonic wit two women conspire to rid themselves of unwanted husbands. In 1946 London the gorgeous Antonia (Helen McCrory) is married to Hector (Ron Cook), a wealthy manufacturer, but is in love with Vic, a handsome physics lecturer. By chance she meets Rose Bell, a young woman she’d known before either had married. Rose is married to Barry Bell ((Jonny Phillips), a government clerk who is a boring, bullying former wing commander. Antonia aggressively takes advantage of Rose’s unhappy state of matrimony, plots Barry’s death, and then expects Rose to assist her in doing away with Hector.
