Entrapment – (2000) An entertaining thriller that begins sixteen days before the new millennium in New York City and ends in Kuala Lumpur the morning after New Year’s eve. Virginia “Gin” Baker (Catherine Zeta-Jones), an investigator for Waverly Insurance, has a plan to entrap the world’s best (oldest) professional thief, Mac MacDougall (Sean Connery), while recovering a Rembrandt painting, worth $40 million, just stolen from the 70th floor of a 90-story skyscraper.

The plan calls for her posing as the Rembrandt thief and convincing Mac to be her accomplice in heisting a gold Chinese mask (shown on the cover of Time magazine) on display in Bedford Palace in England, a theft she believes will appeal to his vanity – “impossible but doable.” Their talents complement each other. Mac tells her, “First we try, then we trust.” After she passes his test, he tells her there are rules between thieves beginning with there’s nothing personal between thieves. When he tells her he’ll meet her the next morning, she warns him not to be late; he replies: “I’m never late. If I’m late it’s because I’m dead.”

With valuable mask in hand, misdirection and the masking and unmasking of true identities follow and lead on to the tallest building in the world housing the International Clearance Bank in Kuala Lumpur. Eight billion dollars are at stake during the brief span of seconds necessary for Y2K-bug testing of the bank’s computer system before midnight. Waverly’s Hector Cruz (Will Paxton), Gin’s supervisor, and Aaron Thibadeaux (Ving Rhames), Mac’s back-up accomplice, have supporting roles. But are we being lured into cheering for the crooks? Lots of rules get broken.
