Don’t Deliver Us from Evil – (French, 1971, subtitles) A pair of Catholic teenage girls, Anne and Lore, form an evil friendship of sadism, anti-Catholic blasphemy, moral perversion, and horror. Controversial even in Europe, never released in US theaters. Directed by Joel Seria, this film inspired Peter Jackson’s Heavenly Creatures. (For interesting background of the film’s genesis, watch the special feature with Paul Buck, British criminologist, who describes the 1950s murder committed by a couple of girls in New Zealand, which led to numerous fictional depictions of the rare occurrence).
